Key takeaways

  • A 100-question exam may deliver 110 items when trial questions are included.
  • Question count and time limit are separate facts: California and Texas differ on time.
  • Use your exact license bulletin; esthetics and barbering are different exams.

Question count and time by state

These are written cosmetology exam examples, checked on October 11, 2026. A blank or unpublished count is not a reason to borrow a number from another state. Recheck the linked document before booking.

Why 100 and 110 can both appear

The scored questions determine your result. Unscored items help the exam program evaluate potential future questions. They still take time to read and answer. Do not plan to skip a question because it seems experimental; the difficulty of an item does not tell you whether it is scored.

Inside California’s 110-question exam

100 scored items + 10 unscored items = 110 delivered questions. The bars compare counts, not topic weights or your likelihood of passing.

Turn the count into a pacing plan

For California, 120 minutes divided by 110 questions is about 65 seconds per item. That is an average, not a timer for every question. Some recall items take seconds; a service scenario may take longer.

A practice plan could reserve 10 minutes for review and use 110 minutes for the first pass: roughly one minute per item. This is a study example, not an official exam rule. Only use flagging and return-to-question features if your exam interface permits them.

  1. Before practice

Write down the total items and full time allowance from your bulletin.

  2. During practice

Check pace at a few fixed points instead of watching the clock after every answer.

  3. After practice

Review slow questions as well as incorrect ones. Identify vocabulary and reading problems.

Do not use another license’s question count

California’s 2026 outline gives the esthetician theory exam 85 items, including 75 scored, in 90 minutes. The cosmetologist format is different. A skin care practice quiz is also not the same thing as an entire esthetics licensing exam.

Start from your board website, select your exact license, and check the revision date, scored items, trial items, and time. If the appointment notice conflicts with a saved document, ask the provider before test day.

How much practice is useful?

Use short sets while learning and fresh timed sets to test endurance. A full simulation only helps when its length matches your program and you review the explanations afterward. Completing hundreds of repeated questions can make recognition look like understanding.

  • Explain the principle behind each answer.
  • Keep separate notes for knowledge gaps and misread questions.
  • Use several fresh sets to check that progress carries across topics.

Common questions

Is the cosmetology state board exam always 100 questions?

No. California and Texas list 100 scored questions plus 10 unscored questions. Other programs may use a different format.

Do the 10 unscored questions count against me?

They do not contribute to the scored result. Answer every item carefully; do not try to identify trial questions by difficulty.

Does the free GlowExam test have the official exam length?

No. The website test has 20 original educational questions. It is a short diagnostic, not a reproduction of an official state exam.
