Cosmetology and esthetics are different exam paths
Use the title on your eligibility notice to select material. A cosmetology candidate still needs hair and nail content; an esthetics candidate needs the complete esthetics outline. The figures below are California examples only.
| License | Total / scored / unscored | Time | Named skin-care domain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetologist | 110 / 100 / 10 | 120 minutes | 4% |
| Esthetician | 85 / 75 / 10 | 90 minutes | 17% |
Why the skin-care percentage is not the entire subject
California’s esthetics outline also allocates content to safety, consultation and analysis, makeup, lashes and brows, and hair removal. Those domains still concern skin-related services even though they are outside the category named Skin Care.
Learn how an observation affects the service: intake information, visible irritation, product directions, hygiene, and the boundaries of your license. This page is for exam preparation and does not diagnose conditions or provide individualized treatment instructions.
A safe service decision sequence
Use this sequence to organize scenario questions. An actual procedure must follow your training, the product label, and current state rules.
Consult and observe
Read the client history and the conditions described in the question.
Check the limits
Look for contraindications, product restrictions, and the license’s scope.
Choose or defer
Select the safe permitted service, modify it if appropriate, or defer and refer.
Protect and document
Apply hygiene and client-protection rules, then record relevant observations.

Try stating the reason before revealing each answer.
| Study question | Answer and reason |
|---|---|
| Should a visibly irritated area be treated automatically because the appointment is already booked? | No. Reassess the service and relevant contraindications; the booking does not establish that a procedure is appropriate. |
| Does wiping a reusable tool replace its required cleaning and disinfection process? | No. Follow the required reprocessing sequence and label directions. A quick wipe is not evidence that the process was completed. |
| Does the word natural on a product prove it is appropriate for every client? | No. Suitability depends on the client, ingredients, directions, and applicable restrictions, not that marketing word. |
Make the next study session specific
Pick one weakness: recognizing contraindications, separating skin structure from function, applying hygiene rules, or understanding product instructions. Read the relevant lesson, answer a new scenario, and explain why the closest distractor is wrong.
Use the skin-care topic practice for general cosmetology recall. For an esthetics license, also work through every domain in the current esthetics candidate bulletin.
- Keep anatomy vocabulary tied to a service decision.
- Do not memorize a clinical diagnosis from a practice scenario.
- Keep state permissions separate from general theory.
Common questions
Is a skin care quiz the same as an esthetician state board exam?
No. A short quiz covers selected concepts. A licensing exam follows the complete outline, length, and rules of the specific program.
Can I prepare in Spanish?
GlowExam offers Spanish study material. The language available for your licensing examination must be checked separately with your board or testing provider.
